A Reminder For When It Feels Hard To Pray
Updated: Aug 28, 2020
Something so important but often something we all struggle to do. I remember the first time I prayed ( a genuine prayer) it was a prayer driven by fear, and not knowing the Lord at that time, that was the only time I thought it’d be good to pray. When I was in trouble. I thought that prayer was a last resort way of saying, "Oh no, I need your help, even though I don’t know you or if your even real. I’ve heard you’re in the business of doing good and helping so please help me", which boggles my mind. I didn't know any better at the time, but boy does it hurt to think of that time. I thought so little of God, as though he was just some genie in a bottle that I could pull out in my most desperate times to grant me my wish.
That was my view of the Father and my view of prayer, but our God is so gracious. Though that moment was driven by fear and not searching to seek the Lord, God used that very moment to show me who He was. I asked for protection for someone I dearly loved that was in danger and long story short, the Lord came through with protection. And so I cried in secret on my knees and wondered in awe of this God I've heard of all my life but never thought would be real. That was the beginning for me. The beginning of the journey the Lord would take me on of seeking Him and finding Him. Prayer is powerful. It is our souls immediate response to cry out to the Father, the Creator, and our Redeemer.
Prayer is powerful. It is our souls immediate response to cry out to our Father, our Creator, and our Redeemer.
Who do you cry out to?
"Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer;
And attend to the voice of my supplications.
In the day of my trouble I will call upon You,
For You will answer me."
I am so saddened when I think of all the evil that exists in the world that comes to steal, kill, and destroy. How can we be followers of Christ and walk in His ways and not pray? You may be feeling, like I am, the weight of all the pain in the world. Things that we’ve been seeing happen since-well the beginning and things that have gone unnoticed for years. Even just human struggles that we ourselves may not experience but we see others going through, its heavy.
What do we do in reaction to all of this? Our immediate reaction should be to go to the Lord in prayer, but sometimes we don't and that's the truth.
Sometimes as human beings we look for other solutions for our problems, temporary promises of peace, and basically anything else to fill us. Yes, I've been there too. You and I will always have those moments where we have to say no to the flesh and say yes to God. My flesh wants to take the easy way out instead of spending time in prayer, it wants to simply read a few verses and check off a box on my "good enough Christian" checklist of my time spent with God for the day to feel as though I'm "Christian enough". Friends, can I tell you something? That'll lead you feeling increasingly empty, trust me I know. No, I'm not saying reading your bible is a bad thing, that is such an amazing and great part of our walk with Jesus to constantly be in the Word. What I am saying is when I was reading just to read I was not spending time with him and really listening to what he had to say. Jesus wants to be with you every single day, don't rush your time with him, be in the moment speak to him ask him for forgiveness. I was replacing actual time spent with Jesus by doing an empty action. We are saved by believing in Jesus, wouldn't you like to get to know this Jesus? God will reveal himself to you in His word and also in prayer, but just doing those things to just "do" them isn't doing them from a heart full of love for the Lord.
How can you expect a relationship to survive without communication?
This is the same with God. Are you angry? Tell him. Are you sad? Come to him weeping. Is a brother or sister in need? Cry out to God for them. Are you full of joy? Praise Him in all circumstances. Do not underestimate the verses that say to pray without ceasing.
"Pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."
1 Thessalonians 5:17-18
It’s not always a closed eyes on your knees all day type of thing, don’t get me wrong it can be and oh how beautiful those moments are. But it can even be as simple as you whispering underneath your breath “Lord I can’t do this help me, show me how you want me to go”. This is prayer too. You’re not screaming out into the void. Prayer is not like feeling as though your in one of those dreams where you are yelling but no sound is coming out from your mouth and you're not being heard, that is not what prayer is. You are in direct conversation and communion with God. The God, the creator of heaven and earth, who painted the stars and the skies, and still calls you by name and wants to know you is the one you are speaking to. The God who sent His only begotten son to die on a cross so that you may have eternal life with HIM! How amazing is He?
God just wants us to speak to Him. That’s what’s been on my heart. I’ve been in seasons where I thought of reading and studying my bible as good enough, yes those things are great I encourage you to do those things. but prayer oh man.. it brings you to a place of intimacy with God, even Jesus prayed. He didn’t say sit and soak up all the info and you’ll have the best relationship. I've learned in my own life that I must not do things in performance but out of love for the One who loved us first. So yes read your bible and yes pray but do those things out of the love in your heart for God.
"If we have died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful—
for he cannot deny himself."
2 Timothy 2:11-13
God is faithful. I know it may be hard for you to pray right now but He is with us. He is with you. Though the hardships may come, though we may fail Him at times He never fails us, and He is always good. Remember this today: He is faithful, He loves you, and wants to be with you. No longer run from prayer. Be vulnerable and tell God all the things you struggle with, you can tell Him anything. By choosing the things of the world to fill us we deny Him, He is the only one who can truly satisfy our souls. If you've never prayed before, I encourage you to start but remember it doesn't have to be fancy just honest. I'm praying for you friends, my hope is that you love the Lord with all your heart. God bless you all!!!
