Trust or Fear?

Updated: Aug 28, 2020

We tend to fear, despite the Bible stating "do not fear" multiple times. Crazy right? That is just part of what is difficult being human, we fail all the time at being perfect and yes sometimes that means even though we know God we may still get scared sometimes. We forget that there is only one most perfect one, who came, and died for our sins on the cross and resurrected so that we may have eternal life. Jesus. Oh how wonderful He is. There will be times when we are fearful of circumstances still, even knowing God. We are not perfect but He is.

Fear of The Present

Fear is not some new phenomenon that just happens to be relevant for the season the world is in currently. Many have felt this before and might be feeling afraid currently or not. God is greater than all of our fears. Our fear doesn't surprise Him. Some of us, I believe are being posed with these questions in our mind: What's next? What will life be like after this? What will life be like without this person? Will I make it through this season?

But, where are we putting our trust?

Honestly, I fall into becoming fearful sometimes but I am constantly being reminded that though we may be scared right now or with any area of our lives we have such a good God still. Trust He is working all things for good (Romans 28:8).Trust Him, He knows our needs.

For a long time, I was very fearful to do a lot of things. I'm a bit shy sometimes (slowly improving that, lol) so when asked to speak in front of people I'd run from it. When God asked me to do things I was scared of or didn't make sense to me, admittedly I'd run. Not in any way me trying to make excuses for my disobedience but I now know the root of what the problem was for me, I wasn't trusting Him like I said I was. I was saying, "I trust you Lord", but my actions weren't aligning with what I was saying. I am learning in my walk that I can't be fearful anymore, especially not of the things He asks me to do or circumstances, Though sometimes I fail at this still, He is still working in me too. He wants our full surrender and for us to trust in Him. By obeying Him, I am trusting Him and loving Him.

God's word is amazing and when you begin to have a few fearful or worrisome moments I encourage you to immediately go into the word, spend time with Him, and pray. Really try to listen to what He wants to say to you in that moment of fear or worry.

Heres a few verses that come to mind, to meditate on:

1. "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love"

1 John 4:18

We are told to love one another, though we sometimes fall short of this we know that God loves us perfectly and that in Him our loves grows more perfect. "...Perfect love casts out fear...". When we are so consumed in our Father's perfect love fear has no room and is casted out.

2. "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil;

For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23: 4

This one is one of my all time personal favorite pieces of scripture. In times where I was fearful or in need of a reminder that through everything He is with me, this passage of scripture repeated in my mind. God is with us and comforts us, in those valleys or facing death we can know those truths, not having to fear.

3. "It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” Deuteronomy 31:8

Here is one of those "Do not fear's". God is with us he will never leave us or abandon us. How awesome is it that through it all we have these truths: 1. He goes before us 2. He will be with us 3. He will not leave us 4. He will not abandon us. What an amazing comfort we have in the Lord!

The Bible is filled with all these wonderful truths, but don't just take my word for anything in this blog I encourage you to search the scriptures and read for yourself to see if it is true! ( Acts 17:11 ). This goes for anything you hear or read really, check with God's word always.

Fear is common especially in the times we are in now, in a literal pandemic. Though, I also think this is relevant even while not in a pandemic, we have fear sometimes even in little things. This is not the first time in our lives where we feel this. Know that that is a normal human reaction or feeling, but trust in God, lay it all down for Him, know that He loves you, and is with you through all the uncertainties of life. Your fear may not be gone instantly or it might, but we can allow Him to continue to work in us in His perfect love to cast out our fear.

He is the one we can be sure to never fail us. We're living in some really strange times, love one another as He has loved us, and trust in Him. I hope this has encouraged you today to know that God will never leave you nor forsake you, this walk of life may be difficult but our God is so good and merciful every single day. Let's together trust in the Lord and lay our fears down at His feet today and everyday. I pray that you may be healthy and seek the Lord every single day your life!
